on a whim

 034

Somewhere I saw little red shorts with gingham pockets.  The vision sat in my head, I can’t remember where I saw it…a blog? a book? in a dream?  It never went away and now summer is on the downside (so I hear anyway, it will be warm here for a couple more months).  Suddenly making these shorts became a priority, like paying the bills or making a chocolate cake (that is so a priority).

So you can understand why I did what I did.  It made sense at the time.  After dumping a mountain of fabric on my floor I realized that, indeed, I didn’t have a piece of red denim like I thought.  I went through my husband’s closet and picked a red denim shirt.  And truthfully I was proud of myself for being resourceful.  I took pictures and snipped off the sleeves, which suddenly made me realize that yeah, no duh, he hasn’t worn it in ages because it’s summer.

What’s done is done, right?

Hope you’re having a good weekend.  Ken’s friend is making us some BBQ, the Texas kind that includes a smoker and brisket and 20 hours. There’s something about being here in the extreme heat and seeing people in cowboy hats and plaid shirts that make you want to eat BBQ all the time.  With beans and slaw and banana peppers and pea and onion salad (this is my favorite) and Pepsi.  Sounds healthy, doesn’t it?

I love impulsive actions! And, I agree, those shorts HAD to be made!

Oh your post really had me laughing! The shorts are great, well done! Oops guess the shirt was perfectly good still (I can so see myself doing something similar). Funny how some things (ideas that buzz around in our heads), can become a priority in a very real way.
You make me smile.

You are a very good writer. Has anyone ever told you that you capture your blog audience through your words. I read and I think...what is she going to say next? It's full of snap, crackle and pop!
Happy to be here for a visit!
Love sent, in the heat wave...off to the country fair in Washington today...looking for the lemonade stand!

Love your red shirt story. And the finished product is so cute. I used to have a boyfriend that was from TX, and his Dad made the 20-hour brisket. Of course, it all got washed down with about 20 beers. Ha! Hadn't stopped by in a while - glad to see that all is peachy in Freckled Hen land. :o) --Robin

Those little red shoes your son is wearing are sooo cute! I had a pair like those myself a couple dozen years ago. Hee hee. The shorts are darling and the BBQ get-together sounds like something us Michigan folk would love as well. :)

Hello from Idaho,
I stumbled across your blog somehow and I am so glad I did.
This last post had me in stitches!
I can totally see myself doing something like that:)

UH OH, bye red denim shirt (once SO BELOVED).

I won't tell a soul what you did.

Oh, and THANK YOU for pledging to read the printed word. I LOVE real books and since I write them, well, my living depends on SOMEONE remembering to buy books, not KINDLES, ibooks, etc. And to top it off, what have we gone and done this summer? Remodeled an apartment in an 1850s building in a bustling New England river village. Name of lodging place? COMFORT FOUND-Literary Lodging. And it is crammed with good reads, but will people read??

All joys,
