happiness is boiled cabbage

010

Hadley went through logistical chaos to get home this past weekend.  And Hadley, dear, even though you only really spent 1 day here it made me very, very happy.

PS H is pretty, the cake is sliding off the plate and there are no handles on the highboy.

Today is her 18th birthday.

Her birthday meal was our version of a  New England boiled dinner.  Instead of corned beef I use turkey kielbasa…my Irish mother in law is surely laughing, but corned beef is so fatty and it’s hard to find a decent cut around here.

PS my Irish mother in law is very nice, I tell ya. Éirinn go Brách.

I boil it all in chicken broth…potatoes, parsnips, carrots, onion, cabbage and add the kielbasa the last half an hour of cooking.

PS You need a really big pot. And a lot of mustard.

Can you tell I’m a gourmet?

H loves boiled cabbage and it must be hard to eat in college as even if she had a hot plate boiling a head of cabbage in her room would be like, totally uncool.

What are your kids favorite meals?

Happy Birthday to you my dear, sweet daughter. I miss you!

PS Are you wondering why there are no handles on the highboy? Because we had it made while living in Turkey and once we were stateside I realized the brass handles cost 3x as much as having the highboy  made. We will get handles when pigs fly. Okay?

I do love Cooked Cabbage.
I must admit that I do love Cornbeef as well.(it must be the Irish blood coursing through me veins:)
But,I grew up on Cooked Cabbage and although I am not as lovley as her,it certainly didnt hurt my looks either;)
I think there is something to the stuff!

My kids favorite meal: Not boiled cabbage, that's for sure! Wow! I hang my head in shame and say that it is probably pizza...Chef Boyardee to be exact. Oh, and they love homemade hamburger helper...So, yeah. My kids are not up to boiled cabbage.

What a pretty birthday girl! And that dinner looks fantastic! My daughters birthday dinner just included fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy and corn. Can you say carb city??? That's my girl! :)

Happy birthday to your daughter! the sausage and cabbage sounds like one of those comfort food meals. Everyone's favorite recipe from Mom! :-)
(It is nice when kids go away to college and realize that they do miss you, and the food you cooked... and admit that you are not such awful parents as they thought when they were in high school. LOL!)

I used to request ham and potato casserole for my birthday. We make something very like your boiled dinner but in the crockpot. Makes the whole house reek of cabbage but we all love it. And if you're home all day you don't notice the smell :) Do you apply mustard at the table? Never thought of that. We're having roasted cabbage tonight. Can't wait to try it!

Oh, and happy birthday Hadley! Many happy returns of the day!

PS- I couldn't see the "visual verification" word so I had to click on the man in the wheelchair. It is REALLY hard to figure out what to do with that! Hopefully I got the numbers right.
