note to self

Having toddlers and teenagers under the same roof can sometimes be hazardous, though amusingly they share many of the same characteristics...one of which is too much make up.

Henry helped himself to Maggie's mascara during his nap. This must have happened about the time I was singing "Ticket to Ride" by the Carpenters really loud. I won't do that again. Hopefully he won't either.

Wanna see a great movie? Watch David Copperfield...this version. It might be my favorite movie. But it's hard to commit to a favorite movie. Daniel Radcliffe is in it from his preHarry Potter days. It's really very good.

a list

A while ago I cut out a subjective list of romantic movies from the staff at Victoria magazine.

When I say "a while ago" it means I have no idea when I did this...it could be a year ago or ten years ago. The list has been sitting in my desk for many moons. Slowly I have been checking off movies I have watched--thank you Netflix. So far I have yet to be disappointed. It's this time of year when I most enjoy classic movies. Something about the cooler temps and the preholiday spirit. Click on the titles for more information.

Classics:

It Happened One Night

My Man Godfrey

History is Made at Night

Gone With the Wind

Waterloo Bridge

The Philadelphia Story

The Shop Around the Corner

The Lady Eve

Now, Voyager

The Palm Beach Story

Casablanca

The Bishop's Wife

The African Queen

Roman Holiday

Sabrina

Summertime (1955)

Funny Face

An Affair to Remember (1957)

dinner and a movie

It's a rare thing to venture out to the movies with just one child. Maggie and I treated ourselves to watching Julie & Julia on Friday. She is 14 and loves to cook and I like to blog. Could there have been a better movie for the two of us? We both really enjoyed it. I am happy to recommend you see it but I will warn you about three things first...

1. Maggie was the youngest person in the theater.
2. I was the second youngest.
3. Out of the 50 or so people there I would guess 1 in 4 was snoring. The woman sitting next to Maggie was snoring the loudest. Like the kind of snoring you do when you're fake snoring for your kids.
If you have seen it, did you like it?

Tonight we made French Bread Pizza. I thought I would share this as more an idea than a recipe, it's easy to make and assemble in the morning while the day isn't too hot...then just bake it in the evening.

I made ours by sauteing mushrooms, garlic and spinach putting them atop whole wheat french loaves topped with pizza sauce (easy to make) then topping it with fat free mozzarella and a little cheddar, turkey pepperoni and a bit of feta. On the middle one I used a chopped pineapple. It's better than takeout unless you live in NYC and have a gourmet pizza place around the block that serves a thin crusted salmon and caper pizza. Then when it comes to dinner you are luckier than everyone else in the whole wide world.

The picture just uploaded and it looks rather bad--all grainy and home ec like.

What if you go see the movie and think it's boring and come home to make these pizzas and you get an upset stomach? Boy, that would be just terrible.

old news movie review

It is always my intent to watch a good movie when it comes out. Intent and actually seeing it are two different things. Usually about ten days after it is out in the theater I make up my mind to wait and buy it on dvd. Then when it comes out on dvd I won't spend the $19.99 and think I will rent it. Rarely will I rent it. But the intent is there from the beginning. So when I see a movie and buy it and watch it more than once, it must be really good. And that is the case with Miss Potter.

I was a bit dismayed at first as it starred Renee Zellweger--actually I like her very much and even though I enjoyed her in Bridget Jones I think my heart thought Beatrix Potter should be portrayed by someone from England. She proved my heart wrong and as an added bonus my heart got to swoon over Ewan McGregor. He gives me sweaty palms, in the good way.
So if you are worse than me with movies and haven't seen this movie yet even though the intent was there you just might like it. It's not too late.
